A condition that occurs when a person uses certain drugs including heroin or other opiates during pregnancy and the substance passes through the placenta into the bloodstream of the fetus, causing withdrawal symptoms after birth. NAS requires hospitalization and treatment to address the infant's withdrawal symptoms and other health complications such as low birth weight, jaundice, and seizures caused by in utero drug exposure.
