Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome

Taxonomy Code: YF-3000.6746

Patients who continue to experience symptoms, conditions, and related multisystemic complications four weeks or more after the initial acute phase of a COVID-19 infection. Because the condition can affect nearly every organ system, more than 200 symptoms of long COVID-19 have been recorded. The most common symptoms include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, tiredness or fatigue, memory loss, difficulty sleeping, attention disorder, cough, changes in or loss of sense of smell or taste, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, joint or muscle pain, stomach pain, and diarrhea, or new or worsening difficulty completing activities of daily living. Patients may as well (or instead) have been emotionally affected by the illness and have sought mental health care. Brain fog is among the most confusing symptoms for these patients, who report being unusually forgetful, confused or unable to concentrate. Some have reported feeling better for days or even weeks and then relapsing. The condition can affect anyone, regardless of age, previous health status, or the mildness or severity of the COVID-19 infection. The scientific name assigned to the condition is Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (PASC).
