A disorder that is characterized by absence of or irregular menstrual cycles; ovarian cysts (in some but not all cases); high cholesterol levels; high blood pressure; excess facial or body hair; thinning of the scalp hair; acne; skin tags; elevated insulin levels; insulin resistance or diabetes; excess "male" hormones such as androgens, DHEAS, or testosterone; obesity or unexplained weight gain; and/or decreased sex drive. The condition affects 5% to 10% of all women and is a leading cause of infertility.
